Dog Training as an Inspiring Activity

"A WORKING DOG"

I've seen the Rocky Mountains
And the Gulf of Mexico.
The California Surfers
And palm trees in a row.

I've read the works off Shakespeare,
And seen Picasso's paint.
The sounds of concert pianists
And heard the bagpipes quaint.

And all of these have trilled me,
but not one could compare
With watching herding dogs a-working,
A single or a pair.

There's magic in each movement
That Mozart never had
And beauty in each turn,
That makes my heart feel glad.

There's science in each answer
Of every whistled tone,
That Newton never thought of
Nor ever was he shown.

There's feeling in the handling
That only poets know,
Or men that work with stockdogs
And feel the teamwork grow.

Wherever life may take you
In sunshine or in fog,
You'll never quite forget it
When once you've worked a dog

Dog training is really about learning to communicate with your dog. Training is about you learning, how your dog responds to different stimulus. Every dog is very unique in the intensity and method it responds to each thing that stimulates them. Each handler needs to learn this about every dog. This is why I beleive in individual training programs or very small classroom programs. Programs based entirely on food will only work for food motivated dogs, same with toy training and compulsion training. I believe that, although there are a few situations where compulsion is required, these situations are rare. If you train your dog the old ways with compulsion then you will break your dogs spirit and you will not have a dog who loves doing things for you.

We offer both basic and advanced training.

For those looking for basic training we help you with the following:

Dogs are social pack animals and require a clear social order. When your dog enters your home, the first thing they do is try to find out what the social order is. We show you how to demonstrate that you are the leader. Once you establish leadership your dog will always try to please you. We show you how to communicate with your dog. If he doesn't do what you say it is almost always because you failed to communicate properly with him. Even though sometimes you think he is being bad to spite you, he isn't. The third thing we show you is how to socialize your dog, most people have a wrong idea of what socialization means, we try to dispell the myths around this. Socialization will allow you to bring your dog anywhere without fear of bothering anyone. This is really what makes a companion out of your dog.

See our Dog Training Rates page for schedules and training rates.

We offer the following types of personal training:

Obedience Obedience training is one of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself. Obedience training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want her to do.
Problem Resolution Very often dogs develop behaviors that are not acceptable. Many of these problems are not resolved by regular obedience classes and need some special attention to determine the problem.
Tracking This is a special type of scent training. The TD, TDX, UTD and UTDX are some of the most exciting titles the CKC/AKC offers for your dog. The energy and focus required to track really redirects your dogs drives into positive desired actions. It is such a thrill to discover what you and your dog can do in this field.
Protection Our canines are trained to pass the American Working Dog standards unless other standards are required (e.g., NAPWDA or USPCA). The K-9’s will be trained to perform advanced aggression.
Search & Rescue Search and rescue dogs are the hard-working heroes of disaster relief, but it’s all a game to these talented canines. Finding a victim brings a reward – a hug, a treat, a tussle with a favorite toy. Dogs are trained to follow the scent in different terrain and weather conditions. Their skills are sharpened through regular training sessions and by handlers with daily training at home
